In March 1961 Pravo-Tatibinskaya geological-research group of Imanskaya expedition situated in v.Roshino started exploration works on the right side of Dalnaya river. The chemical analysis of water from Vostok-2 stream displayed an anomalous amount of metals. Only volunteers were directed for detailed elaboration of Vostok-2 stream. Under trying conditions of inclement late autumn, when living in tents and even rationing foods , they made 5 prospect-holes and 2 ditches (10m and 20m).
On the 27th of October, 1961 geologists exposed a very rich part of the ore-body. In such a way the unique Vostok-2 tungsten deposit was discovered.
On the base of the deposit the construction of Primorsky ore-concentrating group of mines (Primorsky) was started. The industrial exploration of Vostok-2 deposit was organized in 1965. 3 years later Primorsky was included in the list of the most important buildings all over the country by the Government decision. The delivery of materials and equipment was organized during winter seasons because it was impossible to supply them in summer due to the absence of roads. At the same time the construction of settlement in Dalnaya valley was started: panel dormitories, the canteen, kindergarten, shop and company head office were quickly made.
Exploitation of the deposit started from the open pit in 1969. The main implements of mine workers were picks and spades. Ore was transported to v. Roshino by helicopters and then by automobiles up to the railway. After that it was shipped in railcars for further processing.
In 1973 the first stage of the pilot plant with gravitational processing flow sheet was put into operation. Two years later the second stage was started and the concentrate containing 25% of WO3 was produced by flotation method.
On the 12th of August, 1977 there was a grand meeting devoted to setting in operation the First stage of the Primorsky.
In 1984 the construction of Primorsky second stage was finished and mining volume was increased up to 350 thousand tons per year. In 1985 the construction of the third stage was started. It mainly supposed the building of deep mine shaft and horizons.
In December 1991 JSC “A&IR Mining” (A&IR) was organized for the purposes of exploration and mining of small deposits. The company was engaged in exploration works, mining operations, ore-dressing and commercial activities.
Until 1992 the Primorsky had been operating stably with a high profitability. Financial conditions, construction works and production capacities promoted the rapid grows of settl. Vostok. That period was of its prosperity.
The number of population reached 7500 of people; there were 2 high schools and 3 kindergartens. Palace of culture, preventorium, swimming pool, and gymnasium were built. The chorus got the title of “National”. The airport was constructed and regular flights were organized.
But in 1993 in a view of sudden reduction of tungsten consumption inside the country and government decision to sell about 100 thousand tons of the tungsten concentrate the Primorsky and A&IR stopped production and were closed out for 3 years (1995-98). Companies’ closing painfully affected people. The population decreased two times. Many of the most skilled staff left the settlement.
In 1997 company authorities took on $ 3 million commodity loan from the government and the underground mine and ore-dressing plant resumed operation in February 1998. Unfortunately, economic instability and necessity to penetrate the world tungsten market required to reduce the number of personnel more than three times.
During the period of 1999-2004 the mine and plant revived gradually. Three mine horizons and a shaft were put into operation. Serious repair works at the plant as well as tailing pond reconstruction were made. There were prepared reserves for 10-12 years of mine operation.
The Board of Directors decided to diversify production by development of timber processing business, which included timber-cutting, deep processing of timber as well as complete waste utilization by producing heat energy.
The decision in favour of foundation of timber processing division was based on two factors: the location of the settlement in taiga and inexhaustible forest resources provided the careful usage and forest renewal. This work was started in 2001 and it is being continued today.
